FROM THE DESK OF COMMANDER
DAVID MAY
SERVICE!
This month I would like to recognize a small chapter
in the Department of Ohio’s Fifth District, Thorold Heinlen Chapter 100.
Chapter 100 is located in Crawford County in the city of Bucyrus. They received
their DAV Charter on July 19, 1945. Chapter 100, being a small chapter, does
not slow them down in understanding and doing the DAV Mission, SERVICE TO
VETERANS!
CARE PACKAGES
for SERVICE MEMBERS
A few years ago Chapter 100 members decided to provide
care packages for service members serving Overseas. The care package project
would be a big challenge for chapter members, spouses, kids and love ones. By
working together as a team, sorting donated comfort items, filling the care
package boxes and addressing them before taking them to the post office for shipping
Overseas became a very successful “Service” project.
COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP
A successful project takes chapter members organizing
the local veterans’ service organizations and local community businesses.
Bucyrus businesses have done fund raisers for the chapter to help support the
care package project. Also, they helped the chapter to purchase items at cost
and donated many comfort items. In each care package the chapter includes a
letter on their chapter letterhead informing service members who assisted
Chapter 100 in making the care package possible. Chapter 100 also asked the
service members to share their care package with a fellow comrade and share
special items included in their care package for children in their area.
With the community help Chapter 100 has mailed more
than 250 care packages to our troops overseas. Each box weighs about 10 pounds
costing about $1.50 per pound. They use 12"x12"x8” boxes that are
provided free by their local U.S. Post Office. Most important, Chapter 100 has
taken the time to thank everyone at the chapter level and in the community for
making this service project successful. A care package means so much to our
service members serving in harms way. A small DAV chapter, Thorold Heinlen
Chapter 100, in Bucyrus, doing service work makes a big difference in
demonstrating to the local community what DAV is all about. Service!
Chapter 100 members also make other donations to:
Fisher House, Honor Flight, Ohio Veterans Home (Sandusky), and VA Medical
Centers. I salute Chapter 100 officers and members for all they do for our
service members and veterans in Ohio. Thank you! Chapter 100 members: Charles
Christman, William Bartley, James Clark, Terry Boswell and Donald Scheerer. I
would like to recognize and thank Don Scheerer, Chapter Treasurer, for his
help in providing info for this article.
In closing:
1) Please consider participating in a state-wide DAV
Team Ohio Forget-Me-Not Drive (FMN) by scheduling a Chapter FMN on the first
weekend in May.
2) Become a chapter delegate representing your chapter
at our June DAV Department of Ohio Annual State Convention and making a chapter
donation during Department’s Parade of Checks.
Please consider designating your donation in support of our DAV National
Service Officers in our Cleveland and Cincinnati Service offices.
3) Department Officers and District Commanders should
submit their Activity Report to Department by May 15.
4) Chapter Officers Report must be submitted within 10
days after your 2011-12 Chapter Officers have been installed. Please mail a
copy to Department, DAV National Headquarters and the closest DAV National
Service Office.
5) As I mentioned earlier, Thorold Heinien Chapter 100
is a small chapter. They have a Big Heart and Desire in providing ”Service” by
doing several “Care Package Projects” for our service members Overseas. Please
consider making a donation to assist Chapter 100 during our Parade of Checks at
our June DAV Department Convention. For more information about Chapter 100
“Care Package “Service” Project feel free to give Treasurer Don Scheerer a
call. Don’s number is in the Department Directory.

Thought for March: The logical man has a shorter life expectancy
than the practical man, because he refuses to look both ways before crossing a
one-way street!!
A REMINDER:
Our Chapter annual election of officers is coming up, with the first
nominations due at your March meeting, the final nominations and election at
your April meeting, with installation of all newly elected and/or appointed
officers to take place no later than your May meeting.
News of
Interest: Pakistan can’t feed
its people, educate its children, or defeat insurgents without billions of $ in
US aid, yet, with China’s help, it is now building a 4th nuclear
plant to produce more weapons grade fuel.
Hero’s
Unwelcome: Columbia University
students heckled an Army War Hero, during a town-hall meeting on whether ROTC
should be allowed back on campus.
Tuskegee
Airman Dies: Mr. Alex Boudreaux, a
Tuskegee Airman and member of Class of 2005, Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame, passed
away February 20.
Senate
Bill SCR2 – Ohio
State Senator Chris Widener introduced legislation urging President Obama &
NASA to select the Air Force Museum at Wright Patterson Air Force Base for
public display of a space shuttle orbiter.
And, Boeing has donated $5 million for a new building at the Museum
which could house the shuttle and Presidential aircraft. For the full text of this bill and other
pending legislation, go to the following website: http://www.legislature.state.oh.us/search.cfm#bill_keyword
How
many DAV Members have you signed up this month??? Convince each qualified veteran that joining
the DAV helps them and their fellow Disabled Veterans as we strive to make
better lives for disabled veterans and their families. And, each time you sign up a new DAV Member,
don’t forget to sign up their spouse and other extended family members to join
the DAV Auxiliary. Remember: You get credit through National’s recruiting
programs for signing up Auxiliary members as well as DAV members.
As always, keep our troops in Afghanistan in
your thoughts and prayers as they fight, like we have fought, to keep America
free. Never shall we forget that Freedom
is not Free!!
May God bless all of you. God bless our troops, God bless the DAV, and
may God Bless America, home of the Free, because of the Brave!
